The proportion of the elderly population in Korea is expected to be 34.4% in 2040, and life expectancy in 2022 is expected to be 82.7 years, 10.1 years higher than the world average.

For the first time since 2008, when Korea began compiling population statistics, there are more people in their 60s than in their 40s.
As we enter an aging society, the number of registered residents aged 65 or older will exceed 10 million for the first time in July 2023.
As of December 23, 2024, the proportion of senior citizens aged 65 or older among the registered population will exceed 20%, making it the second-highest in Asia after Japan. There are calls for an urgent comprehensive revision of the industrial and welfare systems to accommodate the reality of the super-aging society.
According to the future population projections by Statistics Korea, the proportion of the elderly population in Korea will be 34.4% in 2040, similar to that of Japan (34.8%), and by 2045, it is expected to surpass Japan and become the oldest country in the world. This is largely due to the birth rate, which is the lowest in the world.

The current middle-aged generation in their 60s who still have to work, lacks jobs

When comparing the median length of employment by age in the U.S. and Korea, the length of employment in the U.S. steadily increases with age, while in Korea, the length of employment sharply declines after middle age. This shows that it is not as easy to continue working at the same job after middle age in Korea as in the U.S.

From the company's perspective, regular employees are mainly hired from the relatively young generation, and the only job opportunities for middle-aged and older workers are irregular jobs, so the proportion of irregular workers is rapidly increasing from middle age onwards.

There may be a reason why they are reluctant to do menial or manual work due to their high expectations based on their accumulated experience and years of experience. However, the reality is that it is difficult for middle-aged and older people to find jobs regardless of the nature of the work.

As always, it is important for the government to step in and establish institutional measures, but wouldn't it be more fundamental to expand employment stability through market forces?
