Hole Cup Movement
Hole cup movement

The reason for moving the hole cup is to protect the grass by dispersing the pressure traffic.

Hole Cup, diameter 108 mm

How to move the hole cup

The order of hole cup replacement is
1) Cut new hole cup -> Remove the turf -> Fix hole cup -> Place flag
2) Remove existing hole cup -> Fill in the removed turf -> Level

The hole cup zone is usually located within 4 steps from the edge and within a 1m radius of the hole cup.
This usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

How to move the hole cup

The general standard for hole cup movement is 100 people (i.e. 20 teams - 4 people) . According to research, it is known that within a 6m radius from the hole cup, there are more than 200 footprints (pressure) per team (4 players + 1 caddy), and if there are 20 teams, there are more than 4,000 footprints.

Therefore, it is necessary to protect the grass by dispersing the locations of footprints and divots by moving the hole cup.

The hole cup manager usually sets 9 or 14 hole cup zones per green in advance and replaces the hole cups at least once a day according to the hole cup replacement schedule.

The operator's workbench carries a hole cutter, replacement hole cups, targeting rings, water bottles, and leveling plates.

The order of hole cup replacement is
1) Cut the replacement hole cup -> Replace the flag and then install the flagpole
2) Existing hole cup removal -> filling, leveling, and watering to prevent drying
.

The hole cup zone is usually located within 4 steps from the edge and within a 1m radius of the hole cup.
This usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

Depending on the position of the hole, the flags must also be replaced. The colors of the flags are as follows based on the player.
-Green front position = Red flag --> Front pin, front pin
-Green middle position = white flag --> middle pin, middle pin
-Green back position = Blue flag --> back pin, white

Why? The hole cup moves...

Traffic pressure and traffic stress

Simply put, the main reason for moving the hole cup is to protect the grass by dispersing the pressure.

First, a definition of terms.

-Trampling (traffic): refers to the pressure applied to the grass surface by livestock, people, equipment, etc.

-Traffic stress: This refers to the stress that the grass receives from pressure and various injuries caused by people such as players, stewards, and managers, and vehicles such as golf cars and management equipment.

Pressure stress is a problem that occurs due to the wear of the turf caused by the pressure of frequent footsteps of players, soil compaction, turf surface deflection caused by changes in the soil surface, and divots caused by the ball falling.

-Wear tolerance: This is the ability to withstand pressure applied to the grass surface by people, equipment, etc.

Ultimately, the hole cup movement is intended to distribute the pressure by moving the hole cup in order to reduce the degree of pressure on the green, which has limited pressure resistance.

Winter hole cups should be installed in advance in the amount required based on the “light snow” season in November before the ground freezes, as the green freezes and the hole cups cannot be penetrated.

Pre-drilled hole cups should have artificial grass caps inserted to ensure that play is not hindered.

To avoid problems with the operation of the green moa, it must be installed on flat ground within 1m of the hole cup, and the height of the clubhead must be the same as the height of the green surface.

Even during winter, the hole cup should be moved once or twice a day to distribute the pressure.

Although the standards are different for each golf course, summer hole cups are used as is and installed in advance.

Hole Cup, diameter 108 mm

The size of the hole cup is 108mm (4.25inch) in diameter. Some people jokingly call it 108mm(?) or 108 troubles(?).

The current hole cup size is said to have been applied to all golf courses in accordance with the rules of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of England in 1891.

The hole cup installation guidelines follow the rules of the United States Golf Association (USGA), and the standard for official competitions is

1) Location considering the difficulty of the course rating and slope rating for each green according to the intention of the green designer.

2) The hole cup is a location that allows for fair play without being difficult, and provides good shot value. (==> It's hard to explainㅜㅜ)

However, general management standards are basically based on the green condition, weather conditions, and ecological condition of the grass.

1) At least four steps inside the green edge

2) A flat area with a radius of 3 to 4 feet (90 to 120 cm) around the hole cup.

3) Consider the condition of the grass where you want to drill a hole.

4) The hole must be drilled vertically (except for greens that are on a sloping surface).

5) Place the green so that the front, back, left, right, and center are balanced.

6) The diameter of the hole cup is 108 mm and the depth is at least 101.6 mm (4 inches).

7) The cylinder must be buried at least 25 mm below the ground.
