Vertical mowing of golf course greens is possible from early June onwards. This is because the vegetative growth period of grass is from early June to early September.
If you do vertical mowing on a lawn with low density or weak roots, it is more likely to cause damage. For cold-season grass, it is best to do it in the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October), which are the optimal growing seasons, and for warm-season grass (Korean grass), it is best to do it between June and August.
When you do vertical pruning, the roots are cut and new roots grow, which promotes growth.
Also, you can remove thatch in a short time. The area that has been thinned out must be topdressed, and the grass surface is corrected by the topdressing agent. However, you should be careful because if you topdress weak grass, it will actually hinder its growth.
Vertical mowing is one of the grooming operations that raises the grass stems on the green, which is necessary to create a uniform green surface. Vertical mowing is the process of removing the grass that is in the ground, which helps maintain the quality of the green.
In addition to vertical mowing, grooming and brushing are also included in grooming to improve the quality of greens.
-Earthing up (hilling, moulding, earthing) = During the growing season of crops, the soil between rows or between plants is scraped under the plants. Earthing up has the effect of preventing flattening by strengthening the supporting capacity of small roots by lifting up the soil between small plants, and has the effect of burying and killing weeds that grow in the furrows.
-Vertical: Upright, perpendicular to a plane. Perpendicular
-Thatch: A mixed organic layer of shoots, stems, and roots of dead and living plants.
Aged grass on the lawn causes poor grass growth. Thatch is formed between the grass above ground and the topsoil. Korean grass contains relatively much lignin tissue that lignifies the plant, so a thick layer of thatch is formed despite its low growth. There are vertical mowing, brushing, and sweeping to remove thatch.

Green Vertical, Growth Promotion and Thatch Removal

For cold-season grasses such as bentgrass greens, this is usually done twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall.
Especially in the case of Kentucky bluegrass, vertical mowing twice a year is essential because summer patches, fairy rings, and dry spots tend to occur due to large accumulations.
The frequency of vertical mowing is determined by the rate of accumulation of thatch. In the case of greens, the allowable range of thatch layer is about 6 to 12 mm, and vertical mowing should be performed when the allowable range is exceeded.
The strength of vertical mowing is determined by the spacing, thickness, and depth of the blades. Setting the vertical blade low on the lawn surface can minimize damage to the grass and can help to raise or thin the grass, but the amount of thatch removed is reduced.
In the case of greens where maintaining the quality of the grass surface is important, relatively low vertical mowing is performed.
It can also be used to create a seed bed when overseeding. When the purpose is to remove thatch, the depth of the blade can vary depending on the depth of the thatch.
It is recommended to adjust the depth of the vertical blade so that it can touch the bottom of the thatch layer and lower it so that the soil surface under the thatch layer is cut.
The depth of the blade should be determined within limits considering the condition of the lawn, as excessive removal of grass roots, underground stems, prostrate stems, leaf surfaces, etc. may cause damage to the ground surface.
Vertical mowing should be done in a straight line . If you turn while working, the grass may be damaged. The direction of work should be changed every year.
It is important to avoid working in areas with low density carts, areas with high pressure, areas with artificial structures, around manholes, around heads, around greens, and areas with steep slopes, and to perform coring with small aerator equipment to avoid missing any areas during renewal work.
If the soil is dry, watering the night before work is efficient in terms of work concentration, speed, and vertical blade wear.
Heads and electronic switches are marked with repair flags to prevent damage to equipment or heads.
After vertical mowing, the removed thatch and soil are dried and separated using a steel mat, and the remaining organic matter is removed using a sweeper. Vertical mowing is a very difficult task because it takes a lot of time to remove the removed thatch and grass clippings and the limited sweeper equipment.
To increase the efficiency of the sweeping operation, the organic matter and soil can be separated with a steel mat and then the organic matter can be gathered to the center of the fairway using a blower, which can significantly shorten the sweeping time.
Excessive betting after vertical mowing can interfere with play, so do it 2-3 times rather than doing it a lot at once.
If you plan to apply a pre-germination treatment in spring, it is efficient to apply it after vertical mowing.
