Fleeway Prediction Sequence

5. Mowing height

- General management: 18mm ~ 25mm / Competition period: 17mm ± 2mm ==> Usually working at 20mm.

-Spring: 17~23mm, Fall: 25~30mm

- Since autumn is the time to store carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis, adjust the forecast upward to increase photosynthetic efficiency for winter hibernation.

Precautions when predicting fairway

1. In the case of slopes, you can reduce scalping of the fairway by paying attention to the direction of the fairway's rotating blade.

2. Border Prediction: Usually 2 round borders are required.

3. Uphill slope prediction: The angle of the blade must be adjusted properly so that the blade cuts the grass evenly.

4. Downhill prediction: Be careful not to cut too low compared to the predicted surface.

5. Pattern prediction method: It is easy to maintain a consistent stripe pattern if you keep the starting point constant.

6. Grass cutting treatment: Sweeper is a machine that cleans the cut grass. It is 66cm wide and uses a rotating brush to gather and suck up the grass.

- Sweeping the debris with a sweeper increases the density of the fairway grass and prevents thatch.

7. Frequency of prediction: 1-2 times a week, 3 times a week during the growing season in July and August

Fairways are an important part of course maintenance, and it is important to keep the grass in top condition.

For this purpose, various management methods are used. First, regular lawn mowing is essential. By keeping the grass at an appropriate height, the ball can roll well. Second, proper fertilizer and watering are required to maintain the health of the grass. Third, regular preventive measures should be taken to prevent weeds and pests.

Fairway grass types
The grass used for fairways varies depending on the region and climate. Common grasses include bentgrass, bluegrass, and Bermudagrass. Each grass grows well in specific climate conditions and requires different care. For example, bentgrass grows well in cool climates, while Bermudagrass thrives in warm climates. These climate conditions should be taken into account when choosing grass for fairways.

Renewal: Teeing grounds and fairways made of Korean grass have the peak growth period in the summer, so it is advisable to carry out renewal work such as vertical mowing, slicing, and coreing sufficiently in late June to early July to induce new growth of aged grass and remove accumulated replacement. In particular, in places where soil is severely hardened due to intensive trampling, such as air fronts, regular teeing grounds, and green collars, it is advisable to perform aeration work to sufficiently promote grass growth.

Fertilizer management: It is believed that the growth management of Korean grass during the summer will have a great influence on the accumulation of winter storage nutrients. In other words, the photosynthetic amount of Korean grass during the summer is maximum at around 38℃ and gradually decreases when it exceeds 40℃, so in the climate of Korea, growth reaches its peak in midsummer. In addition, since the stored nutrients of Korean grass are almost depleted during the summer, supplementing organic acids to replenish them is an effective way to instill vitality. The organic acid mainly used is fermented vinegar, and the spray concentration is about 0.1-0.2%, and the spray amount is preferably about 200-250㎖/㎡. Recently, brown sugar has also been used a lot in addition to fermented vinegar.

If nitrogen fertilizer is excessive in Korean lawn, the water requirement increases accordingly. If sufficient watering is not done to prepare for this, it can cause drying damage or a phenomenon of under-watering, so it is very important to apply an appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer before the rainy season. From July to mid-August, the root and above-ground functions are easily weakened due to high temperature and humidity, so apply Type 4 compound fertilizer 2-3 times at two-week intervals to supply trace elements through foliar application to promote growth.

In early April, the Korean grass on the fairway, unlike the green grass (bent grass) or Kentucky blue grass (teeing ground grass), is not green yet, so it seems that it has not yet woken up from its dormancy, but it is already moving its roots and sprouting new shoots underground, preparing to greet customers with a beautiful appearance this year. Our diligent course managers also work to pull out new life forms above the ground at that time and help them grow strong, and one of those works is the verti-cut work.
As the name suggests, a verticut is not a horizontal blade that cuts the grass, but rather a vertical blade that lifts up the debris underground. Underground, there are many grass leaves and roots that have fallen and accumulated while mowing the grass since the golf course was first built. This organic matter, which we call thatch, usually accumulates on the soil surface and contains a lot of moisture and nutrients like a sponge, so it becomes the main habitat for various pathogens that are harmful to the grass. When this thatch accumulates and becomes thick, the grass roots cannot grow deep, so the grass becomes weak to trampling, and it dries easily even when the weather becomes slightly dry, and it also becomes vulnerable to diseases.

Therefore, the course manager removes this layer of thatch to help the new shoots that come up in the spring grow healthily. (Of course, the work period can vary depending on the greenkeeper's judgment.) The greenkeeper checks the weather forecast, plans the work schedule, discusses the schedule with the golf course manager, and then posts a notice on the golf course homepage in advance to apologize for the inconvenience to customers who will be playing that day. Or, the day of closure can be designated as D-day.
On the morning of the first day of work, the greenkeeper instructs the person most familiar with the equipment to pull the verticutter mounted on the tractor. He gives special instructions to work as far away from the customer as possible, or to wait until the customer is near and stop work until the team passes before starting work. He also checks again to see how deep the verticutter blade will go into the ground and to make sure it is set correctly.
Next, assign a worker to drive the sweeper (a device that sucks up the thatch that has been dug up from the ground, like a vacuum cleaner) and a dump truck driver to empty the sweeper bucket and throw it away whenever the sweeper is full. The time for this process varies greatly depending on how deep the blade of the verticut machine is inserted. The deeper it is inserted, the slower the equipment becomes and the more thatch that comes out, so it naturally takes more time.

As the verticut worker moves forward with the blade along the fairway line, a cloud of dust rises and old thatch begins to rise from the ground. When a larger amount of black thatch than expected pours up, the sweeper follows and sucks up the old thatch. The sweeper bucket is already full even though we are only halfway down the fairway. At this point, a dump truck approaches next to the sweeper and scoops out the thatch residue in the bucket, emptying the bucket. The thatch collected by the sweeper is taken to a waste storage yard far from the course and temporarily piled up there. The verticut work continues like this, going back and forth on the fairway, until the entire 18-hole fairway is finished.
The greenkeeper goes back through the holes where the verticutting work is finished to check if the work was done neatly and if there were any places where thatch was spilled while being loaded onto the truck, and checks the soil condition of each hole. Above all, since the soil surface was torn by the verticutting blade, the roots may have been exposed to the air, so he checks regularly to make sure that the grass is not dry and does his best to ensure that the new shoots grow smoothly.
